Intro to Phlebotomy Techniques (CCS 633)

Description

Students will learn both theory and practical skills in Phlebotomy; theory topics to include working in healthcare, health and safety, troubleshooting difficult draws, and working with all demographics from neonatal to geriatric patients. Practical skills in phlebotomy will cover how to perform both venipunctures via hypodermic needles and winged-infusion needle sets (butterflies) and capillary blood draws via fingerstick and heelstick methods, as well as procuring high-quality specimens for diagnostic testing.

Although certification in phlebotomy is not required in the state of Maine, it is important to both prospective employers and to patients. Successfully obtaining certification is also valuable to the phlebotomist as it shows that they care about thier career choice. To be eligible to sit for the certification exam, students will have to perform a minimum of 40 live draws.
